I am interested in cosmology, and there was a planetary convergence to observe. I had to return this October to enjoy the peaceful setting and to take advantage of its remoteness. I had visited this place and spent a night last autumn, but due to COVID, the Opera House was not open for tours. Too bad, it is a shame to see it go, but maybe returning the place to the desert is the best course right now.… But there is no such evidence, the whole place is very dreary and unkempt, and there doesnt seem to be anyone around to keep the place to minimal habitable standards. If I saw any evidence that this place was being actively restored, such as a hammer, saw, wheelbarrow, paintbrush, a worker, anything, I would have gladly given this place 5 stars. There was no one around at 7 AM to help, so we just dropped our key off and left to find breakfast somewhere. Brought our own bagels and coffee but when we used the toaster and microwave we tripped the breaker. There was coffee grounds but no brew basket or pot. Restaurant is closed but they set up a table with a toaster, microwave and coffee maker. The paintings on our wall and ceiling were amaturish I had the feeling that Chuckie was staring at me all night. There were faint smells of sewage in our room and in the hallway. The dark green carpet brings memories of the movie "The Shining", and the carpet in our room apparently covers just a dirt floor. A couple years ago we passed the place on the way to DVNP and thought it was just funky enough, so this time (March 2022) we made a res.
